#VidHuddle: Recording Audio
Audio is less forgiving than video. If you have okay video, sometimes you can make it work. But just okay audio, or bad audio, and viewers will leave your video. This is a brief dive into recording audio with microphone recommendations and tips.
Q1: What are your thoughts on the death of MP3?
A1: I really like the AAC codec and WAV files, so I'm happy that MP3s are phasing out. I wish video codecs would phase out too #VidHuddle
Q2: What frustrations do you have recording audio
A2: Well I want to record audio to go with my YouTube videos. I think the hard part is aligning it while doing the editing. #vidhuddle
A2: My frustration is audio is hard for me to visualize. Video is easy for me to fix, but audio is harder for me to troubleshoot #VidHuddle
Mainly, it's "where will it end up?" Each platform/outlet has different volume requirements, or, like YouTube, have no "standards" at all.
Q3: What are some of your favorite microphones?
A3: #1 @SennheiserUSA Never had issues with them, they're durable and last forever. @rodemics are great too, especially on a budget #VidHuddle
A3: The one I use most is the Sony EXAM 44b Omni-Lav mic. Good quality for a cheap price. #VidHuddle
A3: we use Sony Countryman lav a lot, its TINY. So tiny it gets dinged up a lot but good quality #VidHuddle
For ADR, Sennheiser 416 (to match location boom), for VO, AKG C414 is ALWAYS reliable, and my old RODE NT2 for down and dirty.
Q4: What's the biggest mistake you've made with audio?
A4: Making a wedding video with the bride and groom lost some of the Groom's speech. So had to duplicate the audio we did have. #VidHuddle
A4: Not actually recording. :( #VidHuddle
Q5: What are some tips for recording audio?
A5: Since I'm new at it I don't have much. But test beforehand and make sure you speak clearly. lol! #VidHuddle
A5: Be sure to listen but always keep an eye on your visual levels meter. #VidHuddle
Q6: Share your favorite audio stories.
A6: Can't find it, but I love how they created the #StarTrek ship sound with a truck and 'photoshopping' the audio in protools #VidHuddle
Was working on a doc about 9/11. Had to recreate the sound of the towers falling, plus crowd reaction. Difficult on many levels.
